What is Arthritis?

The direct meaning of the word Arthritis is inflammation in the joints. Human body has joints in legs, hands and back, where Arthritis can cause pain, swelling, and friction to move the muscles. The tissues connecting the muscles become stiff and painful, even for carrying out one’s daily activities normally.

There are many forms of Arthritis plaguing people. Yet the commonly found ones are Osteo Arthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. In the first one the cartilage between the bones wears down (due to aging or other reasons) and it leads to bones grating with bone. Rheumatoid Arthritis is sort of auto-immune disorder, whereby the inflammation of the soft tissue (synovial membrane) leads to bone loss.

In both the cases, when there is friction between the bones without flexibility and lubrication, automatically movements of these joints cause pain and swelling. There are also other types of Arthritis such as Gout – a complex form of Arthritis, which can attack people with severe pain suddenly; and Fibromyalgia Arthritis (although it is similar to Arthritis) which will be longer-lasting and causing pain (not in the joints) as well as tiredness in everyday activities.

What are the causes of Arthritis?

The causes vary according to the types of Arthritis. Most of the types of Arthritis are caused by a combination of one or more factors, such as genetic makeup; hereditary; abnormal metabolism; overweight and obese; infections; dysfunction of immune system and injury or trauma affecting joints etc.
